Is Curfew Necessary?

December 28, 2017

There was once I saw a mother crying because her child, a 15-year-old boy, has not been home and it was already past 11 o’clock in the evening. And the teenager would not listen to his mother because he was enjoying the company he had that time.

When the boy went home at around 2 o’clock in the morning, he was attacked by some unknown group of people, with blood all over his face, was rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, he survived the incident. From that moment, he learned his lesson and understood the value of curfew and how it will affect his life.

Young adults are not aware of their vulnerability on the streets, especially when it is late at night. That’s why curfew has become an option.

However, discussing the topic of youth curfews will always become so controversial. Parents require limits to their children to protect them from unpleasant and harmful situations. On the other hand, teenagers most of the time feels like it is not reasonable for it takes away their freedom. Some cities or local governments cite complications on implementing this law due to teenagers disagreeing along with some adults.

Parents Side of the Story

The above incident is just some of the reasons that drive parents to decide and impose curfews on teenagers. The safety of their teens is one of the major priorities they have as a parent. For children who want to have freedom, setting up a curfew might cause a little tension in the family.

But, if the parent is strong-willed, this can be a good training ground for taming and nurturing one’s child to become more mature and responsible when growing up. A responsible parent always thinks of their children more than they think of themselves. It does not mean that they want their teens to be locked indoors but a way of keeping them out of possible danger.

Local Government’s Part

Youth or juvenile curfew laws are local ordinances that restrict the public of a certain age (typically under 18 years old) from going and being in public places or in business establishments in certain hours. The reason behind this ordinance is to secure the social order in the locality. Its primary goal is to prevent crimes and violence involving teens and maintain peace and order in the place.

The increasing reports of juvenile delinquency have become a significant problem in most communities due to their involvement in violence and drugs. The local government had to address the issue by implementing such law that can somehow lessen the unwanted incidents.

All parents and local authorities tend to point out a common goal which is to protect the youth from unwanted, dangerous incidents. The laws are being made not to put anyone in danger but to keep away random occurrences. Curfew is needed for us to have a safe and protected community. What can you say about it? Do you want curfews to be implemented in your city?
